Greatest of All Time

Unlike Troy and Abed, my friendship with Da Man thrives on debates, arguements, disagreements, what have you. So it should come as no surprise that we had yet another disagreement about who is the best defensive first baseman of all time. This debate is a no contest as all the facts are out there for anyone to see. The best defensive first basemen of all time is Keith "Mex" Hernandez. Here are the reasons why.

Lets start off with the fact that he has 11 Gold Gloves, the most of any other first basemen all time. That alone makes him OFFICIALLY the best defensive first basemen ever..... but let's not stop there. Keith Hernandez revolutionized the way first base is played. He single handidly took away the bunt from opposing hitters. He has 1,682 assists, third all time and finished his career with a .994 fielding percentage. His career lasted an astonishing 17 years.

Now unlike Da Man, I don't let my emotions cloud my judgement. I believe that Don Mattingly is right behind Mex defensively and not by much. On top of that he was a beast of a hitter. If I had to say who was the best all around first basemen of all time, Mex may not make my top 5 but Mattingly certainly would.

Comment as you see fit.

We have a "COMMENT" tab for this so please post accordingly.

***And comment I shall... Here's my take
"I'll make this quick. Best defensive 1B of all time would included a lot of great players. But as J-Rod stated above it really boils down to two players, Keith Hernandez and Don Mattingly. Period. As usual, let's go inside the numbers... DM had 9 gold gloves 2nd to only KH with 11, who posted the 11 consecutively (at feat to his own, very impressive). DM's would have been 10 consecutive but in 1990 McGwire won a GG. Rrrrrright, because Mark was known for his glove. Apparently voters dig the long ball too. But a real test of GOAT for defensive 1B is two things, Fielding Percentage and Errors, the two things the individual controls, would you agree? Assists can be marred by a clumsy 2B. KH during his 11 year run had a FPct of .994. DM, his was .995. KH during his run, had four seasons in which he posted double digits errors. DM during his run NEVER posted a season with double digit errors. So Donnie Baseball beat out Hernandez in the two most critical categories for defense. All KH has is two more "awards" than him. Case closed." -DM

But I will respond regardless. Keith Hernandez not only has MORE gold gloves than Mattingly but he changed the way the position is played forever thus make him a "revolutionary" player. Mattingly and every other first basemen after Keith adapted his way of playing defense. Although Mattingly was a great defensive first baseman he was not The Greatest. That distinction goes to Keith Hernandez. This is fact. You may continue to live in denial but history is already written and will never be changed. Keith Hernandez.... the great defensive first baseman off all time. GOAT much like Biggie.
